Exercise Safely

If you are just beginning to exercise, take it slow, listen to your body and follow these tips so that you can prevent injuries and get the most out of our your exercise.

PROPER EXERCISE PROCEDURES

BE PREPARED:
If you have any health problems that might affect exercising, they should be checked by a physician. You should have a medical examination once-a-year before starting an exercise program.

EXERCISE-RELATED INJURIES:
The best way to prevent overuse injuries is to start exercising gradually, and correctly. Even when you start correctly, injuries can occur. Some common injuries include, sprains, strains, blisters, bruises and cuts. Overuse injuries are the result of doing more exercise than the body is ready for. Side stitch is a pain around the ribs and abdomen caused by exercising. The side stitch usually goes away when exercise is stopped or slowed, and is actually a muscle spasm from over exertion. This pain can also be relieved by pressing on the area and bending to the side or raising your hands over the head.

INJURY PREVENTION:
Some of the best ways to prevent injury include the following:
Be fit. Improve cardiovascular fitness gradually.
Warm up. Stretching allows the body to get ready for exercise.
Start slowly. Do not try to do too much too soon.
Use moderation. Change the exercise program to work the same muscle groups differently.
Exercise correctly. Use proper technique when performing certain exercise and skills.
